Adaptogens: the stress thermostat
Ashwagandha, rhodiola, holy basil — how a small class of plants modulates the HPA axis without sedating it.
Adaptogens are non-specific. Unlike a stimulant or a sedative, they push a stressed system back toward baseline and a hypoactive system back toward function. The mechanism is partly receptor (GABA-A, 5-HT1A) and partly HPA-axis modulation via cortisol-binding globulin.
The evidence that matters
Standardised ashwagandha (KSM-66, 5% withanolides) shows reproducible reductions in morning cortisol and Perceived Stress Scale scores at 600 mg/day over eight weeks. Rhodiola (3% rosavins) shows acute fatigue effects within an hour.
In the pouch
AETHER-1's Adaptogenic Matrix carries clinically-dosed KSM-66 ashwagandha, Rhodiola rosea SHR-5, holy basil and reishi — fully disclosed, no proprietary blends.
