§ II · Traditional use
Heritage

Known in Ayurveda for more than two millennia as gurmar — literally 'sugar destroyer' — Gymnema sylvestre leaf was chewed to suppress the taste of sweetness and prescribed in madhumeha (the classical Ayurvedic description of diabetes). It appears in the Charaka Samhita and remains a first-line botanical in modern Ayurvedic metabolic practice.
